The Fireworks play IPD!

Hi!

No announcements for quite a while but today we can give you one more band who will come over to Berlin for the festival. We invited a London based band who never played in Germany before.

The Fireworks started out as Matthew singing some songs down the phone to people and then people trying to convince him that he should start a band... so he did! A dandelion radio session, gigs in London and playing indietracks last year has started the ball rolling. A single out this Summer on Big Pink Cake Records will offer a hazy noise up fuzz of Summer Summeryness.

The Fireworks are Matthew (Big Pink Cake), Emma (Pocketbooks), Carys (The Give It Ups), and Isabel (Twee As Fuck).  Harmonies, noise, fuzz, tambourines, catchy tunes... is kind of the order of the day and most definitely POP.

here we go again...Indietracks 2012

For all music lovers who are in England at the moment here is an event you can't afford to miss: 6.-8. July the Indietracks Festival at the Midland Railway - Butterley in Derbyshire has -as always- a brillant line-up. Around 50 artists will play across four stages: the outdoor stage, the indoor stage, the church and on steam trains!. This time the legendary American Slumberland label curates the outer stage and you have the chance to see bands like Veronica Falls, Allo Darlin', Girls Names or Sea Lions. Classic bands like The Jasmine Minks, The June Brides, The Monochrome Set and The Vaselines will perform at this fantastic festival as well. There's more info on this magic indiepop-gathering after the klick:

The Holiday Crowd

Shortly after the release of their brilliant debut "Over The Bluffs" (on Shelflife/New Romantic For The World) there has been a lot of enthusiasm on the internet  (here) about these indie pop newcomers from Toronto, Canada. When you listen to their songs for the first time you are immediately reminded of the music of The Smiths: In fantastic tunes like "Never Speak Of It Again" and "While She Waits" the charismatic voice of singer Imran and jangly guitars on reverb recall the atmosphere of Morrissey's former band.

Imran Haniff and Colin Bowers founded the band after high school. They wrote some songs but never played live. After ten years, "the longest break a band has ever had" (Bowers), Imran and Colin decided to play together again. They were joined by Alex Roberts and David Barnes, who now play bass and drums. While the band played the first live gigs in small local clubs in 2011, they not long ago supported Paul Weller in Toronto.

The Holiday Crowd will play for the first time ever in Europe: at Indie Pop Days! We are really looking forward to hearing some of our favourite songs of the last months played live!

The video "While She Waits" was filmed by Street Folk Sessions in Toronto's historic Allan Gardens Park. It features a new acoustic arrangement of this smashing song.

Be Forest

After last year's surprise act, Young Wrist, we are very happy to present another brilliant Italian dreampop band. Be Forest is a young trio from the adriatic town of Pesaro. Their debut album "Cold" on the Italian label "We Were Never Being Boring" is a beautiful example of how the Post-Punk passion for reverb-filled guitar, minimalistic but hypnotic drumming and echoing female voices is still alive.

Inspired by bands like My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Joy Division they still have enough ideas of their own to make us want to dive into their ocean of sound.

This is the video "Hanged Man". Enjoy!

Sleeping Policemen

Sleeping Policemen are serious people. They all have regular jobs but they still find time to make great pop music. In the course of some hard working months with sessions early in the morning and late at night the five-piece from Hamburg recorded their debut. The result is an overwhelming indie pop album, a rare and precious thing in the German music scene. Producer Rick McPhail, keyboard- and guitar player in the legendary band Tocotronic, did a great job. Playing on vintage instruments they write perfect pop songs like "Bonnie" that reminds of early Stereolab and Bella Vista. On other songs late Teenage Fanclub and US-indie-favourites Rocketship shine through. Four of the band members sing in close harmony while a leading voice perfects that sound with beautiful melodies.

No question: The debut of Sleeping Policemen is the perfect soundtrack for a journey with the car on a sunny sunday afternoon.

Here is the video to "High Skies" from Sleeping Policemen's self-titled debut, released on Shining Waters/Apricot in spring 2012.

The poster is here!

Tattaa! This is this year's Indie Pop Days poster. You will see it all over Berlin  in a few weeks and of course we are going to print some postcard-flyers as we did it the two years before. So have a look around in cafes, take one of the postcards, and send some greetings from Berlin!

The little detectives among you can see that there are more bands scheduled for the festival than we announced so far. So here is the next round of artists:

Stars In Coma, The Holiday Crowd, Sleeping Policemen, and Be Forest.

Each of them will be featured on our blog over the next days -  today we want to give you more info on one of our favourite Scandinavian bands, our swedish guests Stars in Coma.

The band  played at the Indie Pop Days festival in 2010 already. The venue was a small place called Multilayerladen, a cafe/bar/gallery we spent our opening night of the first Indie Pop Days Festival. The stage basically consisted of a tall wooden bench. André Brorsson, the brainchild behind Stars in Coma recalls it like this: "I remember observing everyone's shoes because the bench we were standing on were so tall. The whole place was really small but the height of the stage was equal to an arena!" "It was our second show in Berlin, and the audience were really great and supportive," he adds.

Stars in Coma put out its first release in 2005, the "Gizmo goes to War", a lo-fi-sounding tribute to André Brorsson's black cat. Brorsson, who writes and records all music, has been making albums for friends since he was in high school, hidden away in his bedroom playing all the instruments himself. He draws inspiration from folk, rock, dance music and pop. Since he started making albums, the music has moved through periods of guitar dominated rock, disco and swooning romanticism, all of which come together in a perfect creative storm on the latest Stars in Coma release Midnight Puzzle, which has received a lot of praises in various media outlets this spring. Live, Brorsson fleshes out the songs with the help of his girlfriend Nicole Eklund on flute and keys, bass player Mattias Lidehäll and drummer Håkan Carlsson. The band has been actively touring in countries such as Sweden, Denmark, UK, Germany, Italy and France. The band now returns to Indie Pop Days for the second time, and will make sure to cheer up the Berlin audience with their colorful outfits, uptempo hyper beats and unpredictable pop melodies.

Je Suis Animal at Indie Pop Days 2012!

Je Suis Animal is a band that plays together since 2004. The songs impress through playful and magically sounds accompanied by mysterious lyrics that recall early Stereolab, Broadcast, Electrelane, and My Bloody Valentine. If you missed their great performance at our club night in 2009 you have a second chance now. They are playing at Indie Pop Days 2012!  It will be their only live show this year, performing a set of mostly new and some old material.

The band is currently working on their follow up to their debut “Self-taught magic from a book” (2008 Angular Records) and the new album should be ready for release springtime 2013.

If you want to know more about Je Suis Animal here is an Interview with Elin and Anthony talking to Destination Pop when they played in Berlin in 2009.

'The Mystery of Marie Roget' from the debut “Self-taught magic from a book”  was directed by Amund Hesbøl. The song is inspired by a crime story by Edgar Allan Poe from 1842. It is about a beautiful cigar girl who was found dead in the Hudson River.

We are very happy to tell you that Cats On Fire will perform at Indie Pop Days 2012!

The cats will perform at Indie Pop Days and the dogs have to stay outside... What should we tell you about a band that is one of  the most charismatic bands on the indiepop scene?

We don't intend to write the whole story about the band that started in Vaasa, a small town in the western region of Ostrobothnia, Finland.. Here are just some facts:

2001 was the year when the band started making music. Moving to the bigger city of Turku was the next step to get more attention. After releasing their first vinyl EP "Solid Work" on Elva records in 2004 the band "had the means to lift itself above mediocrity"  as singer Mattias Björkas puts it.

In 2007 their first album "The Province Complains" won the hearts of indiepop-lovers around the globe and two years later the album "Our Temperance Movements" followed.
From now on Cats On Fire were playing all kinds of Indiepop Festivals around Europe like the The Cosy Den Festival, Copenhagen Popfest, Indietracks Festival and this year they are coming to us!

They have just released their third album and we are very happy that the band will be presenting their new songs at our festival. On "All Blackshirts to me" Björka's pensive lyrics come with some really brilliant songs - like "1914 and beyond", a piano-song where singer Mattias describes European history with all its crises in a wonderful manner. Some of us got really addicted to this song...you can listen to it  here.

Guess the band!

Hey Hey,

Who is playing Indie Pop Days 2012?

Hello dear Indie-Pop lovers,

the last weeks we spent a lot of time with emailing bands and we think we really found very good artists for this year's festival.

The first band we can announce is the London based band A Fine Day For Sailing.

Jen Hall and Matthew Stead founded the band in Exeter after Phil Wilson persuaded Matthew to sing his songs in front of an audience. Thom, Dan and Sharon who joined the band last winter played in the The Gresham Flyers before. They already performed at p!o!p kombinat berlin in 2009. Playing all together in A Fine Day For Sailing they recruited violin player Caroline Honour to the line-up.

A Fine Day For Sailing released three albums. The bedroom recording album Honeylands (2009, Pop Noise Records) was mainly about Matthew Stead's bittersweet lyrics and wonderful melodies. He also played all the instruments on that first album. One year later the albums "My Baby Loves Pop Music" and "Sand Box" (2010, both Vollwert Records), had been released. "Sand Box" is inspired by the music of the Beach Boys.

Here is the video to the song "Ballad of the bedsit" which was released on 7" on Dufflecoat Records last year. The new Ep "Little Places" is now available on Vollwert Records

Another band playing is not a band but a brilliant one man show perfomance by ex-Moustache of Insanity singer Nik Vestberg. We were really sad when we heard the bad news about the end of Moustache Of Insanity. We would have loved to have them at this years Indie Pop Days.

Nevertheless Fulhäst - the "new" project of Nik - seems to be a very good alternative. After the split Nik had more time to concentrate on his love for Game Boy inspired 8-bit-music. Fulhäst is where - according to his fabulous blog - "ideas came from, before moving on to Moustache of Insanity". Nik is busy working on his first Ep which should be released on Fika Recordings this spring.
